FEATURED STEM ACTIVITiES: National Ocean Sciences Bowl (NOSB)

                                                2022                                                                                                   2025
When I must boil city water for drinking, I think about storm surges and floods resulting from coral reefs falling victim to climate change. I thus lobbied Congress to invest in remote sensing technology for reef conservation during an NOSB mock testimony. Competing in NOSB also meant testing my marine and coastal science knowledge, along with fishing for organisms at Galveston Island State Park, viewing a sea level rise demonstration, and touring the Sea Life Facility at the Texas A&M University Galveston. Learning about how scientists study and take care of marine and aquatic organisms really connected my book readings to real life.

My two-year NOSB experience has sparked my desire to address environmental concerns through technology. It has helped me land a part-time job with the Hydrology & Hydroinformatics Innovation Lab at the University of Texas, Arlington. Working as their CyberTraining Junior Research Associate on Climate, Water & Environmental Sustainability, I stay busy contributing to technological innovation and producing educational videos to teach others about their machine learning tool ARIMA. Immersing myself in collaborative ecological research has deepened my understanding of urban climatology, hydrology, and climate change adaptation. Thank you NOSB for helping me combat global warming to ensure a sustainable future!
